Running the Goat

The local bookshop, which is a short 4-minute walk from the Newfoundland Ocean Lodge, is known for producing its own letterpress-printed books, chapbooks, broadsides, and pamphlets.

Step into the world of enchanting tales, fascinating local history, and captivating characters at our beloved local bookstore nestled in the heart of Tors Cove.

From the moment you step into "Running the Goat" you'll feel like you've been transported to another era. Its rustic wooden shelves are laden with carefully curated titles, some of which are rare finds. The delightful scent of old pages, combined with the gentle hum of conversations and the occasional chime of the doorbell, creates a truly magical atmosphere.

From its origins as a quaint fishing village sustained by cod fishery, Tors Cove has always been a place where stories are born. The local bookstore is an extension of this tradition, preserving the tales of our ancestors while introducing us to new worlds through literature.

Marnie demonstrates the subtle magic of the press

Many of Running the Goat's publications are letterpress printed at the print shop, using moveable lead type, and sewn by hand. Publications are a collaborative effort. Authors and artists are consulted, coffee and cookies fuel conversations and everyone has an opportunity to offer suggestions. Although the press has limited staff, its spirit is collective. Marnie's daughter and local kids are lured into the fun, cranking the press, collating and folding pages, and sewing the pages together, making it a collaborative community space for all.

Why 'Running The Goat', and what is it running from?

I'm glad you asked - it's a set dance, like square dancing, but not. Think promenade and dosey-doe, with special arrangements and configurations for couples. The owner Marnie, explains it best on her site: https://runningthegoat.com/story-of-the-dance/.
